The Portable Boombox – An Old Classic Meets New Technology
Article by Blake Mead
We all remember those classic old school boomboxes. A permanent part of 1980′s pop culture, it seems everyone had one of those big and loud radio/cassette players. If you’re feeling a little nostalgic, you can still find some beautiful vintage boomboxes for sale. But modern portable boomboxes have evolved with technology and those big old boom boxes are now sleek models with everything from satellite radio to mp3 players and iPod docking stations. Depending on your needs, you can find a portable boombox for most any situation.
There are still plenty of simple am/fm radio versions, even waterproof boomboxes, both with and without cassette decks. These basic radio and cassette boomboxes are great for the garage or the pool.
A little more advanced is the cd boombox. Not everyone has gone to mp3s yet. If you still have a huge cd collection, a cd boombox is a must-have. You can use a cd player boombox for exercising, parties, or just to have that perfect music anywhere you are. Lots of people use a cd player boombox for their main stereo system. Some of the well known brands have models that sound as good as any component stereo system. A boombox with detachable or removable speakers makes a great home stereo system. You can put the boombox on a shelf and hang the speakers on the wall, or just spread the speakers out for a better stereo effect. Detachable speakers on a boom box are also great for when you want to play music outside. You can just aim a speaker out the window and not have to haul the entire system outdoors.
Boomboxes are great for kids rooms too. There are many kids-themed boomboxes which are fun to play and sturdy enough to survive being dropped and kicked. Kids boom boxes usually have very simple controls and are a great way to introduce music to children. Some models even have televisions in them. TV boomboxes are always a favorite for children and adults alike.
Now that am and fm aren’t the only choices for radio anymore, you can listen to satellite radio anywhere you want with a satellite boombox. Many of the satellite radio boomboxes have docks where you connect your satellite radio head unit. You aren’t limited to listening only in the car, you can take your satellite radio boombox and have your XM or Sirius radio anywhere.
Some music lovers have abandoned cassettes, cds, and radio all together. For these folks, all their music on on their mp3 player or iPod. If most of your tunes are on one of these personal music players, you’re not limited to listening through earbuds or headphones. You can play your music loud through an mp3 boombox. Just put your music player in the cradle and play your tunes for all to hear. These mp3 docking stations have replaced the large home stereo systems in many people’s homes. And just with the old style boomboxes, you can still take your music anywhere.

Sirius Boombox question by rockinrobin: How do you get a better signal with a Sirius boombox?
I got a Sirius boombox for Christmas. It came with a long wired antenna. I tried putting it by my window. At times, it will pick up a signal, but it will only last about 20 minutes. Is there any way to make the signal stronger?

Likely, the satellite signal isn’t strong enough in your area because you are indoors. The best way would be to put it outside, but since that’s not really an option, try it by a different window. You could need to point it at a different satellite.
