Austin, TX – the Live Music Capital of the Globe

Article by Ron Ronhaar

Austin, Texas is known as the live music capital of the world. There are more musicians in Austin per population than that of any town in the world. With over one hundred live performance places there are always lots of Austin, Texas bands to see 7 days a week of all various styles from country to folk, pop rock, to a variety of eclectic styles that can be found no where else. The South By Southwest Music Fest is one of the largest music festivals and is hosted in Austin, TX showcasing 1,800 groups of all styles booked from across the whole world in over eighty clubs in Austin that takes place over a five day period. South By Southwest was originally just a small music festival that transformed into one of the largest live music festivals in the nation and continues to grow each year. There are other world renowned emerging music festivals in Austin as well, such as the Austin City Limits Music fest, Urban Music Festival, and the Fun Fun Fun Fest. The Austin City Limits Music Festival happens annually in the fall and is a three day concert with over one hundred thirty bands of all styles on eight stages. This concert has been known to draw in over 65,000 people and bands from all over the world. The Urban Music Festival started in 2006 and drew a crowd in excess of 10,000 to enjoy some of the top Urban Music bands. Some of the artists of the Urban Music Fest have been Cameo, Boyz to Men, and the Sugar Hill Gang. The Fun Fun Fun Fest Is another yearly music festival that took off in 2005 and has had a wide array of artists over a few days on 4 stages. A few celebrated artists of the Fun Fun Fun Fest have been the Bad Brains, All and The Dead Milkmen. How Austin, Texas came to become the home base for so many Austin bands is still puzzling but as the live band scene grew over time in Austin, the stigma that it was the place to get discovered and make it to the big time started to attract a plethora of gifted musicians from across the nation. The bands and musicians that came to Austin looking for stardom soon came to discover that there wasn’t any record label personel to sign them there besides the brief visit of industry professionals during South By Southwest music festival and the tremendous supply of artists and Austin cover bands only made finding shows even harder because of all of the competitors. The quantity of Austin, TX bands far outnumbers the amount of nightclubs offering jobs so only the bands end up getting the gigs thereby furthering the popular perception that Austin bands are considered to be the most talented in the land. Many musicians that had come to Austin desiring to make it in the local scene headed back home to face less rivals and found that being a big fish in a small pond was easier and more successful than going into competition with with hundreds of bands in one city for the few jobs there were in such a competitive music marketplace. There can be found various famous musicians that come from Austin, Texas including Del Castillo, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kelly Willis, Pat Green and Eric Johnson to name a few. All these points add up to make Austin, Texas a town that has been famed as the “Live Music Capital of the World”.

Live Music question by Isabelle: What are some great places to go in Austin for live music/restaurants and quiet places for a romantic night?
My boyfriend and I are taking a weekend trip down to Austin for a fun pre-engagement adventure and I’m really into music and the arts so I want to take him to some really fun and interesting places. What are some nice places to go that aren’t too much of the bar kind of scene but still have good live music and food?

There’s so many venues here it’s hard to tell you without knowing what kind of music you like. But, I’ll give you some recommendations..

Elephant Room – quaint old underground place with live jazz music every night and some nice beers on tap. It’s downtown on Congress and 2nd.

Club DeVille and The Mohawk – both places have mostly local and underground bands from softer indie to punk. they are both downtown in the Red River district (music district) near Red River and 9th.

Headhunters – place to go to see a good heavy metal show

Red 7 – mostly hardcore punk and rock

Emo’s – usually bigger bands play here. it’s a favorite because there is Emo’s inside and Emo’s outside joined by a courtyard with picnic tables. So, if you pay the cover at one, you get into both. There’s a good mix of music that plays here.

Beerland and Red Eyed Fly – smaller bands of all types play here, a lot of local acts as well but a slightly different crowd than Mohawk and DeVille.

You can pretty much go anywhere downtown and see live music and eat at resturants. Almost every restaurant downtown is a local Austin place. Also check out the Barton Springs Rd. area for some great Austin original restaurants. Romeo’s is awesome for a romantic dinner and they often have live italian music.

For quiet, I’d suggest either going to a steakhouse downtown ($ $ $ ) or getting out of downtown. If you drive to the west side (Loop 360 or further) you can find some quiet spots to park your car and look at the hill country. It’s generally pretty quiet out west away from the city.
